About this event
San Francisco, home to artists and writers whose ideas and forms of expression challenged the status quo — and gave voice to the issues that defined their generations, and the nation as a whole. This tour explores the germ of those creative forces, through the streets, alleys, parks, and key cultural figures and institutions of North Beach, Jackson Square, and bits of Russian Hill, Telegraph Hill, and Chinatown — home, studio and inspiration to a succession of artists, from the Bohemians of the late 19th C, to the activist literati of the 1930s and the Beats of the post-WWII era. Includes excerpts of poetry, live and recorded, and of the jazz made here in the ’50s and ’60s. 3 hours, 3 miles, on mostly flat terrain Small groups – limited to 10 people wireless personal listening devices used on all tours, ensuring privacy, safety, and the freedom to wander
